Jayant Singh, prime accused in Ariadaha lynching case, surrenders
In a tragic incident, at least 120 people, mostly women, are feared dead in a major stampede. Over 100 people are reportedly injured. The stampede took place during a religious event in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras today. Officials are saying that the death toll may increase further.
At the event, a religious preacher was addressing his followers at a specially laid tent in the Rati Bhanpur village within the Sikandra Rau area. According to the police, prima facie, it appears that suffocation at the venue led to discomfort among the people attending the ‘Satsang’.
Following this, the people started running, causing a stampede. It was very hot and humid during the event, the police added. Rescue operations are already underway.
CM Yogi Adityanath has taken note of the incident and, on his directions, a committee has been set up to investigate the incident. President Droupadi Murmu also expressed her condolences to the families of those who were killed.
